As at today I haven't selected the couplings. I will be looking for couplings that can be simply, remotely uncoupled. As far as I can see there are three credible options:

  • Farish couplings "as is". These appear to need a mechanical ramp in the track, which can (crudely) be operated remotely by a solenoid point motor. I'm finding that some of the carriages are becoming uncoupled at odd locations when they shouldn't do so: I haven't yet got to the bottom of why thisis happening.

  • Peco couplings with magnetic droppers: these can be uncoupled by a magnet in the track. These might be fixed or electromagnet (which I can operate remotely on a DCC address). However as far as I can see both these and the Farish ones would uncouple regardless of the direction the train is travelling.
  • Microtrains couplers: these look more realistic, and have been personally recommended to me. Very popular in USA, they have magnetic uncoupling with a "remote" action.
